While Pigment Yellow 74 (Permanent Yellow 5GX) is widely used as a high-strength, transparent lead-free alternative in water-based systems, it exhibits critical vulnerabilities in solvent-based applications and plastics. In solvent-based inks and industrial paints, it suffers from poor resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones, leading to partial solubility that causes severe bleeding, recrystallization, and subsequent gloss reduction or rheological instability. Most critically for plastic coloring, its thermal stability is exceptionally poor; it degrades rapidly at processing temperatures above 160-180°C. This makes it effectively unusable for injection molding of standard polyolefins (PP, PE) or engineering plastics, restricting its utility to low-temperature flexible PVC, where it still poses a significant risk of migration and blooming due to plasticizer interaction.
